Samsung to lower LCD monitor panel prices

Samsung Electronics will lower LCD monitor panel prices this month, with prices for 17-inch panels reduced by US$3 while 19-inch panel prices will drop US$2, according to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News.

Samsung was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.

During a recent trip to Taiwan, Keun Hee Park, president and CEO of Greater China, Samsung Group, indicated that demand for notebooks and 17-inch and 19-inch LCD monitor panels will remain strong next quarter.

Both DisplaySearch and iSuppli expect prices for 17-inch panel prices to fall. On the DisplaySearch website, the firm predicts that prices for typical 17-inch panels will fall US$1 to reach US$171 this month. iSuppli recently indicated that sales of monitor panels will flatten in the second half of this year and price for 17- and 19-inch monitor panels will decrease in the fourth quarter.

The ASP for 17-inch monitor panels has been increasing since the first quarter of this year after falling more than 40% in the second half of 2004, with the price hitting US$171 last month. The ASP for 19-inch monitor panels, on the other hand, picked up slightly this May after falling more than 40% from last July. However, prices for the segment started falling again in July to reach US$210 last month, according to WitsView Technology.
